The American Civil War By Evan Mawdsley - 1852 Words

â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand†- Abraham Lincoln. Civil wars are bloody times in a nation’s history when its citizens fight against each other for reform or other change in the nation. The American and the Russian Civil Wars are known to be some of the bloodiest wars in each country’s history and having some of the bloodiest or the largest battles in the world. The books I read were The American Civil War: A Military History by John Keegan and The Russian Civil War by Evan Mawdsley. John Keegan was a senior lecturer in Military History at the Royal Military Academy and a professor of history at Vassar College. Evan Mawdsley is a professor of Modern History at Glasgow University and has written numerous books on Russian history. The American Civil War was fought over the succession of the southern states and over the unethical ideals of slavery. The southern states wanted to secede from the union because they felt the states should have more rights and that the federal government should be weaker than it was, the opposite beliefs of the northern states. John Keegan said that the American Civil War was very cruel through the pain inflicted on the participants and the anguish of the families of the fallen. The American Civil War is important because it changed the country forever. The large amount of bloodshed in the American Civil War led to the abolition of slavery and forever changed the world, as did the Russian Civil War. The Russian Civil War was
